The Toyota Supra is one of the most beloved cars in Toyota history and gossip surrounding it has yet to cease since it went out of production in 2002. In fact, the rumors have only grown since 2012, the year Toyota and BMW announced they would be developing a new sports car together—or rather, a new sports car platform.
Supposedly, BMW would use that platform to build the successor to the Z4, and Toyota to build the next Supra. It’s not unlike the partnership that resulted in the Toyota GT86, Scion FR-S, and Subaru BRZ, all of which are nearly identical. However, in this case, we do expect to find more significant differences between the Supra and Z4.

It hasn’t helped that we know precious little about either car, even four years after the BMW-Toyota collaboration was announced. All major details have been kept under wraps or changed enough times to make fans uncertain as to what to expect. For a while, we believed the new Supra would be based on the FT-1 Concept, or that it might pack 470 horsepower, but both of these rumors have remained unconfirmed. In fact, it was never even clear that the car would be made at all—until now.
A newspaper in Graz, Austria, reported that local car manufacturer Magna-Steyr, which builds everything from the Aston Martin Rapide to ultra-tough off-roaders, would start work on BMW’s next sport car in 2018 and on the Toyota Supra partner car a few months after. If that’s not concrete evidence that this thing is finally happening, I don’t know what is.

We still know very little about what they’ll be like, but if the BMW-Toyota sports cars are truly and finally going into production in 2018, we can likely expect a proper announcement, with juicy details, in the coming year.
